Can Stockport overcome their inconsistency? -
Have your say in the footieNews chat room

Stockport are sinking into division 2 mediocrity, the aspirations have not been met, players scoring two own goals in one match. It is madness. Our erratic form seems to have thrown our sense of; if we actually are challenging for the playoffs or battling relegation.

In our last 7 games our form has been WLDLWLW. After our defeat to Brentford we bounced straight back with a good 3-1 away win at Blackpool. Optimism reached the fans as we faced the championship contenders and semi-local rivals Oldham away from home. Of course it wasn’t to be and Oldham walked all over us beating us 2-0.

County's number 1 Lee Jones who had played nearly all games so far was hit with an injury. Unfortunately we don’t seem to have a sub goalkeeper other than a 17 yr old YTS keeper. Good old Carlton got onto his mate Gordon Strachan and asked if we could borrow Alan Blayney a Northern Ireland U-21 international. He agreed and Blayney started against Cheltenham. He failed to keep a clean sheet. Cheltenham took the lead, we equalized and then the match just flopped, a must win game really if we want any chance of reaching the playoffs.

Carlton obviously was in need of some help. Surprisingly he phoned up the Bayern Leverkusen manager Klaus Topmuller and asked to meet him. They had a good old chinwag and Carlton asked his advice. So we all expected to see Bayern Leverkusen Esq. Football against third division Carlisle in the LDV vans trophy. We lost one nil in extra time. A disaster and a bad omen as we were drawn to play St Albans in the FA cup 1st round, a very possible banana skin. Unfortunately for St Albans, we played a full strength team with Lee Jones back in goal. We walked all over them and found ourselves 3-0 up after 57 minutes, playing against 10 men. We went on to win 4-1 and the difference between our divisions was very obvious.

Our completely inconsistent season was exposed when we faced Plymouth away - a real crunch match. We somehow were beaten by the amount we beat St Albans. Our captain was sent off and poor, confused Jim Goodwin managed to put the ball in his own net, twice. That didn’t help; our only goal was an own goal. It was another disaster. Five players were booked and one sent off. We were just three points off the relegation zone of the second division, how could it have happened?

Another must win game against Wycombe was looming and glum faces filled a dreary Edgely Park. County dominated the whole game and amazingly managed to win 2-1, mainly thanks to Lee Jones in the Stockport goal. We took the lead through our top scorer Luke Beckett after he took it round the keeper. He now has 14 league goals, an amazing tally for a Stockport centre forward. We doubled our lead just before half time through Luke Becketts surprise partner Neil Ross, who was almost released just 6 months earlier. He finished off a superb move through nearly all the team.

Two nil at half time, a good sign. The second half was the most uninteresting half I have seen this season, they were always going to get one back. That’s what happens when we go two goals up, we give it all away. They pulled one back with three minutes to go and the fans sighed and started to leave. Wycombe pressurized us for those last three minutes and when they were given a free header 2 yards from the line, we thought that was the equalizer. We saw Lee Jones dive across his goal and somehow tip the ball over the cross bar. We had secured the three points, amazing.

We face Plymouth again in the FA cup on Saturday, time for revenge I think.

Cheers,

Can Stockport win the Div 2 title this season? -

It’s been a while, but finally Stockport have returned. We are now in the wondrous second division where the tackles are hard and the goals are easy! You may think I am being cocky, but the evidence is there. Stockport played 6 won 3 scored 5 conceded 2, amazing we are winning games, 6th in the division and on a roll. The confidence in the club is soaring. Luke Beckett has scored 4 and in my opinion is one of the best strikers in the division. The atmosphere inside Edgeley Park has gone from sarcastic, flippant and downright depressing to optimistic upbeat and positive. Maybe we will do what we did last time we were in division two, finish second and go on a great cup run? Stranger things have happened.

ITV digitals attempts to destroy every nationwide club in the country seems to have somehow missed us. Partly because we were relegated and so the wage bill was cut and partly because it is our turn to have some luck. With the excess cash we have generated we have brought in some new, young faces. Two Ireland U21 internationals, one of which (Jim Goodwin) made his full international debut in Irelands recent game against Finland after playing for the U21s the night before! We have also brought in Ricky Lambert, a talented midfielder with one hell of a good pass, Martin Pemberton, another midfielder who seems like a really good purchase and the other Ireland U21 international Ben Burgess who has a proven scoring record after a loan spell at Brentford last season.

We got off to a pretty poor start after losing away to newly promoted Colchester. Two more draws later and we eventually got our first win of the season against Port Vale beating them 1-0 with Luke Beckett getting the goal. We then faced the impressive Mansfield, who despite outplaying us for the whole first half somehow lost to us by 2 goals in the second half after a much better performance. The spirit of the team seemed to be really high and Lee Jones had one of his best games in a Stockport shirt. Our latest game against Swindon, where tickets cost £21 for adults, maybe they think that the price of the tickets is decided by the size of the ground not the football that is played inside it, bizarre? Anyway despite Swindon's attempts to have the away team have no supporters we had a big following and we managed to come away with the three points. Another fine performance by Lee Jones and another Luke Beckett goal, taking his tally to 4 and leaving County unbeaten in 5 games, we now lie 6th and only three points off the top.

Brentford head division two having not lost a single game and scoring nine goals in six games, they will be tough to catch and challenge for the title but we will try. Our next match is Lincoln away on a Tuesday night in the Worthington cup 1st round, ah the joys of division two!

Can Stockport win the Div 2 title next season? -

Its been a while I’m afraid but here is my latest report.

So the season is over for county, although it did finish about 4 months ago in reality. The news that we were to be playing division two football next season seemed somehow to lift the teams spirits and we started playing like a team heading for the playoffs. We ended the season on great form winning three of our last seven games, this may not seem any great task but for a team in our position it was fantastic. The supporters have been superb all season and stuck with the team I have been very impressed at the response of our fans to Stockport’s results over the season. Brendan Elwood (county's chairman) has rewarded the fans by cutting the season tickets dramatically. Next season you will be able to get two Junior tickets for £77, that is an unbelievably low price ending up at around £38 each. We have already sold about 4,000 tickets and so it looks like the support next season will remain at a respectable level.

In the close season we have already signed two new players a defender on a free and a midfielder/forward for £400,000. So Brendan is obviously able to spend some money on the club at last. There were rumours that we would be signing Tom Bennett back as he has been released by Walsall, this would be great news as I think he is a great player and I think it would be good for us to bring him back.

So Manchester United are not going to win anything this season what a pity eh! I think it would be fantastic if Arsenal beat United at Old Trafford and won the Premiership, give them a taste of their own medicine.

Cheers,

Isn’t football a wonderful game? Stockport County have at last been relegated to division two, it was done by Wimbledon on Saturday, who beat us three one. So now we can enjoy the rest of the season care free, nothing to worry about. So after the Wimbledon game all the county fans looked forward to Tuesday's rescheduled match against Manchester City. We all knew this was to be a great game and one that County had a very small possibility of winning. If City won they would only need three more points to clinch the title so they needed to beat us, County were playing for their pride. I had had a bet on the game with some of my mates, all of them apart from me and one other thought City would win, even the other Stockport fan amongst us thought we would lose. I had a feeling that we would do it again and beat them so I guessed at the game being 2-1 to County.

The game came and we were all up for it, there was quite a big crowd but not full capacity. The city fans took up two sides of the ground and seemed to also be creeping into the Cheadle end where all the County fans sit. Luckily for County, City had Berkovic, Tiatto and Wanchope all out. The facts that City haven’t beaten us at home since around 1909 and that all of County’s wins this season have been under the cover of floodlights made things seem a bit more hopeful.

The team was read out and City had left Huckerby on the bench, another relief for Stockport. We played a team full of young players including two 16 year olds and 10 of the 16 man squad were under 20. In contrast to that we had Palmer and Dibble aged 37 and 34. The atmosphere was good as it usually is in these matches. We started very well, and had most of the play early on, but then City took the lead against the run of play. Dibble saved the first shot but he let it spill and it fell to Macken who had the easy task of slotting the ball into the open net. The county fans groaned and the City fans cheered. The goal looked suspiciously offside but don’t they always. County were then under pressure until about ten minutes before half time.

We started to pressure the City goal. County had a corner it was crossed in, and headed away. It fell to Beckett who headed it goal bound and saw the ball cleared off the line by what looked from where I was, like Shaun Goaters head. It obviously wasn’t his head as the referee pulled out his book and produced a red card for Goater after he had hand balled the ball on the line. A penalty was given and County's top scorer Luke Beckett stepped up. We were really nervous, as he had missed a situation like this earlier in the season. He stepped up and then blasted the ball over the bar, again the county fans groaned we couldn’t believe it. The half time whistle went and I started to think about County in division two and if we would get straight back up. However I was quietly confident that City with ten men may crumble.

The teams came out again and City had brought off Wright Phillips for a defender (Mettomo). Good news for us because Wright Phillips had caused havoc down the right hand side, things were beginning to look up for county. In opposite to the first half County had most of the possession but it turned out to be an uninteresting half until the last ten minutes. County substituted Chris Williams (one of the 16 yr olds) he just couldn’t get into the game because of his size and strength compared to Dunne and Howey. On came a trialist from Blackburn, Marc Byrne, another player named Byrne to play for County after Chris and Dessie, the latter being released from Stockport because of criminal offences!

He seemed to make some difference to the team with a bit more strength and power up front. Again County had all of the play and when Rob Clare was put through after a neat one-two we thought we'd done it, but he decided to pass across and Howey made an easy clearance. After some time we at last got what we deserved, Mclachlan was on the right he fired in a great cross and John Hardiker, who nearly gave up football a few months ago at Morecambe, headed backwards over the out of position Nash. The Cheadle end went crazy and with only had 5 minutes remaining. What a great way to get the goal. The match wasn’t over yet though and we played another two nervous minutes. Macken was then put through one on one, Palmer raced back and made a superb interception. He then beat Macken and then Horlock and cleared it wide to Andy Welsh, he got a standing ovation from the crowd for his little piece of magic.

After a lovely interchange of passes between the County team, Marc Byrne was put through. He played a great ball on the ground in front of Hardiker who cool as you like slotted the ball under Nash. We couldn’t believe it we had in the space of two minutes won the game. The City fans started streaming out and the County fans went wild. John Hardiker had scored two of the most important goals in his life and his first two goals in professional football. The County fans streamed onto the pitch to smother the hero and celebrate arguably their best moment of the season, and I celebrated my winning of my bet and humiliation of all the City fans I know. If you were going to beat Man City that is the way to do it: Miss a penalty then come from behind with five minutes to go and win the game.

County may be heading down into division two but surely there are strong foundations being laid to build a platform from which to bounce back next season. So maybe we will be playing City again in division one in two seasons and maybe, just maybe, we might repeat what happened last Tuesday night and in 1997.

Cheers,

Robin Perkins

We HAVE done the double

I haven’t written a report for a long time and so quite a lot has happened in the world of Stockport County. The main one of these being Stockport County 1 Bradford City 0. OK it may not be two cups but this is the best thing that has happened to County all season and I think we deserve some acknowledgement that we have beaten a team twice. They must be really embarrassed because two thirds of our wins this season have been against them. Unfortunately one of our three wins I managed to miss the first half and the only goal of the game. At last we have another win under our belt it may only be three for the season but at this point its just nice to get the three points. The rest of the game was nerve racking but we played some good football and I was impressed particularly by Luke Beckett who scored the goal.

Unfortunately before that we had lost three games 1-4 to Wolves in a really bad game, 3-1 to Grimsby and 3-0 to Sheffield United. So things had been as normal until the Bradford game. Unfortunately things returned to normal in the next match, meaning relegation is in the very near future.

We had high hopes against Burnley and were ready to give our local rivals and the team we hate the most, a good thrashing. Things didn’t go to plan. We lost two nil and had Jon Daly sent off for apparently elbowing someone. From where I was sat I must admit it didn’t look anything more than a free kick but maybe the ref saw what we all didn’t. So this was a bit of a downer and meant that we can be down at long last in our game against Wimbledon. If we don’t win we are down. If we do win it will be down to the game against Manchester City and if they beat us they will win the league and they could also send us down. I am hoping that the inevitable will arrive on Saturday but football is a funny old game so you never know. It would not be nice to see City beat us at home, win the division and relegate us all in one game. So for the first time this season I am hoping that Wimbledon will do us a favour and put us out of our misery by not letting us win.

County’s former skipper and long term player Mike Flynn has had his contract cancelled and will be leaving Edgely at the end of the season, he has been given a testimonial despite the fact he will be playing for another club, a very rare thing to happen. We have also been linked with the Bolton goalkeeper Steve Banks he has just had a loan spell at Rochdale and is looking to move on and County seem to be the front runners for his signature as some back up for Lee Jones.

I would just like to finish by embarrassing a very loyal Manchester City fan, who will remain nameless. Although they do write for a certain website! For the Burnley game the friend of mine that usually goes to the matches with me was away on holiday, so I had his spare season ticket. I decided to ask my loyal Manchester City supporting friend. He agreed and so came to see Stockport County and this is not the first time he has been before and the last time, was unluckily photographed in the Stockport Express as being a loyal county follower!

Cheers,

Robin Perkins

Is Palmer really a half decent manager? -
Have your say in the footieNews chat room

It seems like Stockport County are jinxed so far this season. We remain bottom of Division 1 and have no hope of escaping. Last Saturday we played our fellow strugglers Rotherham away. I have to say that Rotherham’s ground is possibly the worst ground in the division and looks very much like a division three ground. For some bizarre reason they have given the best stand to the away fans.

Palmer decided to play himself up front with Luke Beckett as we seem to have a striker shortage, he also gave a debut to 18yr old Andrew Thomas to take Palmers place in defence. The game took a long time to get started and was very uninteresting most of the first half, until Rotherham took the lead in the 33rd minute. It then again turned into a boring match which needed goals to spice it up a bit. The second half started as the first half had and both teams looked like they should be playing division two football next season. It took till the 76th minute for the game to get going but when it did it suddenly came to life. It was John Hardiker on his first league appearance for county who started the ball rolling. He headed past the impressive Pollitt to get County back on level terms. But it was the referee that changed that with a very controversial decision to award a penalty after Lee fell over Jones in the area with the ball going out of play. Mark Robins stepped up and fired the Millers back in the lead.

County refused to buckle under the pressure of Rotherham and got right back into it when Delaney on his last game fired in from close range. But Rotherham kept pushing and got what they deserved when Robins got his second of the afternoon when he smashed the ball past Jones from a corner. In the 90th minute County were pushing again and thought they had done it when the referee awarded a penalty in front of the away fans. Luke Beckett stood up to take it - he had missed good opportunities all afternoon and this was his way to equal things out. He stepped up and put a very weak penalty that Pollitt got down to and saved. Beckett was very upset at the end but the County faithful still chanted his name. He had had a very unlucky day as had County and maybe we deserved better. But this seems to be the story of our season so far.

Shefki Kuqi has been in all the papers slagging off Carlton Palmer and his managerial skills. I don’t think this was a very professional thing to do as Kuqi has left the club and so should have put that behind him. The points he state are also just made up and this is not what County need at the moment. I don’t think Carlton is that bad a manager and hopeful he will get us straight back into Division One.

I think Sheffield Wednesday have been ripped off by paying one million pounds for Kugi. He tries very hard but is just too clumsy to make it as a good Division One striker and they would have been better looking at the lower divisions for players like Greenacre and Zamora. I think that there is a lot of talent in the lower divisions waiting to be discovered by big clubs.

I would just like to end by saying how much I hope someone other than United win the league this year. I would like to see Newcastle win it as I think them and Liverpool play the most attractive football in the Premiership, and it would be a nice change to see United not winning it, and to wipe all those smiles off the smug fans. So good luck to anybody else apart from Man U.

Cheers,

Robin Perkins

Can Stockport be a success in Div 2 next season? -
Have your say in the footieNews chat room

Hi again

Again County have been undeservedly beaten at home in their latest fixture and it seems the whole season has been against us and there is nothing that can keep us in Division One next season. We have all accepted that we are beyond help and now Carlton has decided to start rebuilding the team for Division Two. We have brought in new faces with the likes of 19 year old John Hardiker and we have turfed out the players on the big payrolls.

We were on a roll of two games unbeaten but it all came to an end on Saturday in our match against Nottingham Forest. We played the same team that had drawn with Coventry a week earlier. It started bright but went downhill from there. I think it was one of the worst matches I have seen this season. It was terrible the pitch was in pretty bad condition and the football was amongst the most un-interesting I have seen so far this year. The again fantastic Andy Dibble was on fine form until he was carried off just six minutes after half time with the score still 0-0. Lee Jones came on and his first job was to pick the ball out of his own net after Gary Jones converted a cross from Marlon Harewood. Seven minutes later Harewood himself was put through and he coolly chipped Jones to make it 2-0 to the visitors. County didn’t give up as we have seen many a time this season. We kept up the pressure and we were nearly rewarded but we hit the post then the bar in succession. Our pressure was rewarded finally when a Woodthorpe corner was headed in by Carlton Palmer. Carlton is now our joint top scorer, which shows how desperate we are getting. The County fans rose to their feet and we thought maybe we could pull it back to a draw.

We kept pressing but Forest got a break and one of the most bizarre own goals I have seen put any points out of reach. There was a mix-up at the back and Leo Roget attempted to pass it back on the volley to Jones. Instead he got under the ball and somehow lifted it over Jones and into his own net. It was three one to Forest and the remaining County fans streamed out of Edgeley Park.

We face Rotherham on Saturday and it could be seen as a crunch match but we seem too far adrift for a win to make any difference. If we won five games on the trot we would still be in the relegation zone. Wish us luck in our next game and maybe our third win of the season!

Cheers,

Robin Perkins

Can Stockport beat Man City on the 16th February? -
Have your say in the footieNews chat room

Hi again. Sorry for not writing earlier, I have had a bad cold over the past few days so wasn’t feeling too good but I’m feeling much better now. Hope everyone got the results they wanted over the last week.

Stockport have had an interesting week. It was cup week for us and supposedly an upset was on the cards. We were optimistic of something special but no, again we put out a very strange team and we were just lacking that certain something called skill. Bolton put out a reserve team but still managed to run rings round us. Ricketts and Nolan were on the bench so we were let off a hammering. After a terrible tackle on a county player, (which went un-noticed by referee Uriah Rennie) Gudni Bergsson had the cheek to go and score at the other end. This did not go down well with the home fans. We had been getting into the game and there was not much difference between the two teams. Andy Dibble had been performing heroics again but they scored and we just seemed to give up hope. The second was a Karim Fradin own goal, which was cruelly deflected over the impressive Dibble. Fradin was playing for the first time under Carlton Palmer after being transfer listed, so this was a bit of bad luck. The second goal was at a very bad time just before half time and we gave up hope of an upset.

At halftime County made three changes to the team, one forced (Kevin Elisson went off with a hamstring injury and Taylor replaced him) the other two were Helin for Fradin and Welsh for the 16 year old Chris Williams . The killer punch for County was Bolton’s substitution with 20 minutes remaining. They brought on their super sub Michael Ricketts . He made an immediate impact, two minutes after coming on he beat two county players and supplied a great ball in which Pedersen slotted home from about three yards. It was all over then and the County fans went into sarcastic mode. This is usually the time that all the amusing songs are created. We had chants of "we only want one shot" which shows what our play was like.

I think a serious contender to partner Owen up front in the World Cup for England would be Michael Ricketts - he played fantastic and he made County look like a team of amateurs. His goal was the best I have seen at Edgely Park this season. He controlled the ball, dummied one way then the other, totally confusing the useless Carlton Palmer. He then sweetly struck the ball into the top corner. The County fans applauded Ricketts and joined in with the Bolton fans singing "Ricketts for England". Although his goal was good, Gianfranco Zola's goal against Coventry was top class. I think he is still one of the best players in England despite his age.

County managed to grab a consolation goal in the 90th minute after 17yr old John Daly scored his first goal in a County shirt. The goal was from the penalty spot after Nolan handballed in the are. The Bolton fans applauded our goal, which I think was courteous of them. They were very quiet for most of the match and the County fans out sang them, as is the case many times so far this season. Again the County fans applauded their team off the pitch and no boos for Palmer despite the fact we had lost the last eleven matches.

Our next port of call was Highfield road a tough game away to Coventry. We had Dibble in goal again and more or less the same team except we recalled Beckett and Challinor. Again his throw ins worked for us and we managed to create chances and not let a single goal in. We hung on till the final whistle with the score at 0-0 and almost won it in the dying minutes when Jon Daly shot wide with an easy chance. Overall we could and maybe should have beaten them but at least we have ended our 11 game losing streak - maybe things are beginning to lookup. We next face a long trip away to Gillingham on Tuesday night, I will be hoping for our first win in a very long time.

I would just like to finish by saying that I hope we end our streak of not winning on the 16th of February when we play Manchester City. They are the one team we seem to have a good record against and it would be good to wipe the smile off my friends faces - those City fans have been laughing at us all season.

Cheers,

Robin Perkins

Can Stockport escape relegation from Div. One? -
Have your say in the footieNews chat room

"There’s only one Andy Dibble" was the chant that echoed around Edgely Park on Sunday night. The 38 yr old shot stopper was on top form to keep Stockport from only conceding more than one. He seemed about twice the age of the rest of the team, which averaged 24!

We are rooted firmly to the bottom of the First Division and are 15 points behind everyone else, so the future is looking bleak. The Crystal Palace game was to all the County faithful just another thrashing. However, the team put on a much better performance than expected and were unlucky to lose. New signing Dave Challinor with his amazing throw-ins looked like a great addition to the squad. He set up the best chance of the match after his throw was volleyed onto the post. Palace took the lead in the 66th minute with a Dougie Freedman goal after he was put through, he smashed the ball past the unlucky Dibble.

Palace did play well and were unlucky not to score more, they hit the bar once and the post twice. The star of the match for me was the 21 year old County midfielder Keith Briggs who has come through from the youth team and has burst onto the first team this season. He seemed to be the most hardworking County player on the pitch and set up another great chance for County when he released Kevin Ellison only for him to shoot straight at the keeper. Carlton Palmer had changed the team around completely and the new team didn’t seem to know who was playing where for the first ten minutes. Slowly we crawled back into the match and by the end it looked like we could have come out on top, but it wasn’t to be.

Once again the referee and linesmen were a disgrace! I don’t know why the level of referees in the First Division is so different to the level of refs in the Premiership. We were strikerless for three quarters of the match as we have sold our two top scorers and our other main strikers were on the bench. Up front we had the 17 yr old John Daly and the ex Leicester winger Kevin Ellison. Both players had a hatfull of chances but they couldn’t put them away. We brought on Taylor and Beckett and they changed the game around. We looked much more dangerous when we went forward but we just couldn’t get it in the net. When the final whistle blew the County fans applauded their team’s effort and we are looking forward to a big cup tie against Bolton.

I think that most County fans have given in to the fact that we will be playing Division Two football next season but I think we will do our upmost to stay up.

Cheers,

Robin Perkins
